The porn often senses the shift in consumer sentiment long before the mainstream.

The pornography business is a tech bellwether, often sensing the shift in consumer sentiment long before the mainstream world makes a move.

So as the adult entertainment industry’s stars and power brokers walked the red carpet at the recent AVN Awards in Las Vegas – the adult entertainment industry’s equivalent of the Oscars – we polled a few, asking them what they thought would be the next big trend to sweep the industry.

By Chris Morris, Special to CNBC.com

Bree Olson, Adult Film Performer

“I think the next big thing that’s going to be happening in the industry is something we’re seeing already. We’re seeing a lot of downsizing, a lot of compacting.

Also, the line is getting thinner between – and there’s not so much black and white between – the porn world and real world anymore. People aren’t making such a big deal about it. They’re more accepting of it. It’s like ‘She did porn? Ah well.’”

Allie Haze, Adult Film Performer

“Just as in the gaming world, the next thing in porn is 3D. I think we’re a little bit ahead of the game industry, actually, since we’ve been shooting it for awhile. We’ve certainly shot a lot more porn than there are [3D] games available right now.”

Jenna Haze, Owner, Jennaration X Studios

“It used to be parodies, but lately I’ve been thinking that webisodes are what’s next. I’m actually doing my first parody [film] as a webisode internet project.”

Ali Joone, Founder/Owner Digital Playground

“I think we’re in a transition. Live [broadcasts are] going well – one-on-one personal stuff – and I think bigger productions will do well also. For us, we’re bringing glamour back. We’re trying to create an experience couples can experience together.”

Joanna Angel, Owner, BurningAngel

“I think things that are becoming a lot more community oriented. The wall of the porn star is breaking down and I think we’re moving in a direction where there’s a lot more interaction between fans and stars.”

Jewels Jade, Adult Film Performer

“The virtual-sex cam is going to be big this year, where people can control toys on the other side. Customers want more one-on-one attention with the stars. So rather than getting free porn [online], which is a dime a dozen, they want more of an intimate relationship with the stars.”

Eric John, CEO & President, Erotique Entertainment

“The next big thing is live stuff. We went from not even playing in that arena to this thing called Erotiieue TV. We’re already broadcasting 14 hours per day. And it’s a whole different fan base. It helps people who haven’t seen our movies get exposed to us, then they seek out our movies. It also gives a way for people who have seen our movies to interact with us in a direct way. It’s been one of the most successful things we’ve ever tried.”

Briana Blair & Barrett Blade, Adult Film Performers

“They’re started shooting things in 3D, I guess they’re trying to keep up with mainstream technology. For me, personally, I don’t see why I would want to watch my porn in 3D, but some people may like it,” says Briana Blair. (Pictured left)

“People are going to flash cards and USB drives where you can literally buy your product on a USB card, slip it into your computer and receive four hours of footage for a cheaper price. I’m thinking that’s going to be a big help for us in the future,” says Barrett Blade.
